Final Reflection
Throughout this project I have learnt a lot about what goes into making an online series and how it differs from other shows, there are many differences between shows that are based online and show that are on TV or in a theater. A main difference is the was in which the shows are view all three of the these show types are viewed by audiences in different ways. Online show will of course be mainly viewable online on social networking sites and websites. Where as TV show will be shown on a television station and theatre shows will be viewed live by the audience while the show is being performed on a stage. Although these shows are all based mainly in those forms, they can change, such as some TV show can also be viewed on the internet as online shows are, also TV shows, and some very successful online series like ‘The Guild’ have been release for purchase on DVD and online download on sites such as iTunes, as well as being online. The way people view shows is also changing as now people can not only view most things online from a computer; whether it be an online series, TV show or movie, videos from the internet can now be viewed on portable devices like phones and ipod. This means that shows that can be viewed online can now be viewed anywhere be using a phone.
When creating marketing strategies and ideas, the where a lot of possibilities, throughout the project our main source of marketing was the internet, using social networking sites, such as facebook, myspace, twitter, flickr and youtube. This generates a lot more audience interest than conventional strategies such as posters, as poster can only be seen by a limited audience of only people that will be in the area of the poster.

The social networking sites and website I worked to create also helped to update our audience not only of where to view the show but how to contact us and it gave them regular updates on how the production of the show was coming along. As different people are connect to different social networking sites, I decided to create quite a few, but I mainly posted the same information on each, posting the links to the videos on these sites is what got people to view them, if we were to have just put it on youtube and vimeo without telling anyone about them, then no one would have viewed them.

We did use one conventional strategy, we decided that quite a lot of people from college either may not have social networking sites or may to know about the show, so we put up three posters around college to promote each episode. Our group also used the online networking to generate help for the show, I posted messages and updates on; facebook, twitter, flickr and myspace to get audiences that are in an unsigned band to let us use their music in the show, which is how our show got it’s theme song, from a band on myspace. I also posted information to social networking sites to people about needing actors and asking people to audition, although we also put poster up for the auditions as well. I think that using both online and conventional ways on marketing and promotion are a good idea because both generate different types of audiences and are likely to both attract people to the show.
Using the social networking sites our group got very fast responses from the audiences after posting the videos, we get feedback within at least a few hours of a video being posted. Although we get quick responses the responses seem to develop a pattern through the three episodes. The first episode definitely generated the most popularity, it so far has the most number of views, at 830 views compared to episode two, 320, and episode 3, 245. This is a dramatic decrease each episode, which means that as the show continues people are losing interest in the show. Episode one was also the only episode to have views from outside of the UK, episode one had a few views from Spain and USA. This shows that the hype of the show from social networking got people interested to watch but then some people after watching realise that it either wasn’t what they expected or wasn’t the kind of show that they would like to watch. Not only did the views changed over time but the comments change as well; episode one has 15 comments, episode two has 5 comments and episode three has 4 comments. Although all of the comments on each episode have positive aspects, the first episode is the only episode that features a lot of criticism, I think that this is because after the first episode the audience wanted to let us know that they will continue watching and wanted us to know the things that we are going to change or improve to keep people watching. Following the trend, the number of rating decreased also, from 13 to 4 to 2, although the average rating improves the first episode as 4 and a half star, where as episodes 2 and 3 have an average rating of 5 stars. This would indicate that although less people are viewing the show, the viewers that are watching are enjoying it a lot more, because the ratings and amount of criticism is improving.
Unlike in a TV show, where all the episodes of a series are filmed almost all at once, then showed to audience after all the filming is complete, I had the opportunity to get to hear from our audience before filming the rest of the episode, this meant that anything that the audience did not enjoy about the show or anything they thought could be improve, could be changed before the next episode. The main criticism from our audience was the acting in the show, because we were told this before filming the second episode, we had the chance to work through it with the actor and get more rehearsal done so the actors would be more comfortable and better at acting. We did this well because in the second and third episodes we didn’t get as many comments about the acting. We also received feedback saying that the show does not feature enough shot types, so for the next episodes I worked for a lot longer on the shot lists and storyboards to create more variety. This definitely improved to quality of the shows appearance. TV shows that film several episode because broadcasting do not get this opportunity, they can not change or improve the show, according to feedback until all the previously filmed shows have been broadcasted, this means that if audiences don’t like something about a some they may have to wait a whole season of the show to see any improvements, which by then they may have already lost interest in the show. Web series can be influenced a lot easier by audiences than something like a TV show, which I feel is part of what attracts audiences to online series’.

Emailing KIDS LOVE LIES
When I decided on the theme song for the show and email the band 'Kids Love Lies' for permission to use their song 'Count In My Head' in the show. When they emailed me telling me that it was okay for us to use the song, they asked if once we had created the show, could I email them the links to the episode so they can watch what their song was put in.
So once we'd posted all 3 episodes on youtube, I email the Singer and Manager of Kids love Lies; Ellen, giving her the links to all three.

Episode 4?
Although for the project we were only supposed to create 3 episode of the online series, as the fans seem to be enjoying the story lines and watching the show, we are considering making a 4th episode outside of class time and this could possibly lead to future episode if people continue to watch it.
Absense
Although my roles for the first and second episodes meant I was quite involved in some areas, I was not involved in the making or promoting of the 3 episode as I was not in class for the making of this episode, I was in America doing work experience for a TV show.

For feedback from the audience the group filmed some people that have seen the show and they were told to give there thoughts and opinions of Lines.
This is a better way of showing the feedback than just comments on the social networking sites, as this shows the audience and gets the audience to interact with one another.

Views from the first and second episode
These are the views we have had of the videos that shows us what countries people are watching it from.
This shows that the first episode had mainly views from UK but a few from countries such as Spain and USA, but the second episode only has views from UK, this shows that people from other countries watched the first episode to see what the show was but then were obviously not interested in watching any more episodes.

There are not as many comments on this episode compared to the first episode, and also there are as many positive, although some are positive, a lot are comments saying that they are finding it hard to like or get into the show, and some are complaining about the length of the show being to shot to get into it.
The are 4 rating with an average of 5 stars...which although there aren't as many rating is a high average rating than episode one.
Views...there aren't as many view for the second episode as there was for the first, which means that some people obviously watched episode one and didn't like it so didn't watch the next episode.
Over all although the video in my opinion is better than the first, some of the audience feels differently, the lenght of the show may need to be something we should think about, maybe people would be more interested if future episodes were a little longer, to give the audience more of the story at once, to keep them interested.

For episode two and three we made teaser trailers to keep the audience interested and get them excited for the next episode, I seem to work by adding an eliment of antisipation to the series. It was also a way to advertise the show, along with the posters.

I think that this episode is quite a bit better than the first one, I feel the acting has definitely improved and the camera work is quite a bit better.
I think that with this episode we have taken a lot of the feedback into consideration and fixed a lot of things that were not right from the first episode.
This episode is also very close to the storyboards, although some shots are not exactly the same they are all very similar. This proves that my storyboards were useful to the people filming as they will have used them to get an idea of the shots.

- When the character is holding the polos, there could of been a close up

Progress Report Sheet - 27th January 2010
Kirk gave everyone in our class a sheet of paper with some questions that we each had to answer about how we feel parts of the project are going. These are the questions and my answers that I wrote on the sheet...
How do you feel the group has worked together so far?
So far the group has worked okay together, we have worked well in most areas but in some areas such as the script and the filming, many people in the group seem to disagree on things and it sometimes ends in arguements.
How do you feel you have contributed to the group's work?
I have contributed by updating social networking sites and creating storyboards to help the cameraman and director when filming the episodes. I also contributed ideas about the t-shirts and poster. Plus I have created an animatic to help show the motion of the shots to the cameraman and director.
What have you personally thoughts of the tasks you have been set so far in each session? & Has there been enough work for you to do?
Althoug the task of creating storyboards has been very productive, before that, when I was just doing social networking sites I did not feel I was being given enough tasks to do, as between updated on the social networking sites there was nothing for me to do. The reason I couldn't do more with the social networking was that it didn't take very long to update the sites and if I was to keep updating them constantly I would just be repeating myself and viewers would get bored of the updates.
Is there anything you could do better in this project?
I could speak to people more about the fact that I don't feel like I'm being given enough to do and maybe if I keep persisting that I don't do enough then someone may ask me to do a task.
Overall how do you feel this project is going so far?
The project is going quite well, we are getting the episodes and work done on time and are sticking to schedule with all the task we do, the only thing that could be improve is the communication between the group, because I feel if we communication more about any problems we have with each other or the project then our group wouldn't have as many disagreements.

Animatic - 24 Jan 10
I made an animatic of the storyboards I have done so far. This gives a better idea of the motion in the shots than possible to see in a storyboard. I put the theme song 'Count In My Head' by Kids Love Lies in the video.
Storyboards - 22-24th Jan 10
This weekend I have been working on the storyboards for the second episode, Ash has come up with a shot list of the beginning and he sent the shot list to me, with the dialogue in each shot. Then I drew cartoons of what all the shots should look like, this will help when the director and cameraman are filming as they will have something to look and as an idea of the shots.
The shot list;
1.(Narration) Black screen fade to Jake sitting on a table with the camera panning out to the rest of the detention room.
2.Quick slide shot from Jake to Zeke and Megan (mid shot) sitting at the back.
3.Quick cut to Seth’s head from the shoulders up camera is static as he paces.(seth says “i really shouldn’t be here”)
4.Over the shoulder shot, from Megan, pointing at Zeke.(zeke says “here we go again....!”)
5. just after he speaks there is an over the shoulder shot ,from zeke, pointing at megan.
6. Back to seth pacing around. (“there’s this guy right, he’s everywhere, but then he’s nowhere”)
7. quick shots to Zeke and megan, whilst he is talking, looking dumbfounded/ bored.(any talking is the same as in shot 6)
8.Shot of what looks like to be the point of view of the agent looking at seth
shot from behind seth looking at him at an angle we see his eyes shift to the corner.
9. Camera changes to Seth’s point of view, moving swiftly around the room.

...Ash then also helped me with any questions that I had about the shots he had in mind, and I draw then exactly how he described them.

Overview - Project so far (24/1/10)
Over the course of the project so far there have been a lot of minor issues between the class. At the beginning when we were working as one large group we had a lot of disagreements so we decided to split into two groups, and although we seem to have been working a lot better this way there are still some issues.
My role in the groups as part of the marketing team has involved much online work, updating social networking sites such as; twitter, facebook, myspace and flickr. I think that this has helped in generating interest into the show from audiences, although at some points I feel that there was not a lot of information that I could update as I was in most places just repeating the same information.
I also helped in the role of music with Sam, I posted updates on all the social networking sites about finding unsigned bands to have their music featured in the show, this was very successful, I got a lot of replies, many bands sent me and Sam links to their music pages and MP3’s to download. Although Sam was the one to choose the music for the show, I helped in the decision of the song for the opening sequence, and after Sam and I had chosen I emailed the band and asked for permission to use the song and asked for a copy of the song in MP3. I think this went very well as they let us use the song, and I think that the emails that I sent the band were good, as they were professional but not too professional as they are teenagers our age and I thought that they would respond better to people there age like us.
I have also drawn the storyboards for the 2nd episode, this was outside of my role, but I enjoy drawing and the group obviously thought that I would be good at it so I worked with Ash who came up with a shot list and I had to draw each of the shots. I think me and Ash are doing a good job of this so far, we have communicated a lot about the shots talking each through so the drawings would be exactly what he thought they should look like. Although I have not finished them yet as Ash hasn’t yet emailed me the last few of the shots. I really enjoyed doing this task as I felt as felt that the social networking sites was not taking up enough of my time and effort, as it doesn’t take long to update the sites and then I don’t have anything else to do, I also feel that this has now given me more of an insight into the show, as with the first episode I didn’t really have any involvement with the actual show.
I think that with all the tasks I have done so far I have done quite we, although at sometimes I could have done a bit more updating of the social networking sites, but I struggled with the updates because no one really told me information that should be up their. I future I am going to try and get more involved in things like the storyboarding as it gives me something more productive to do during the times between social updates.
The group’s main problems so far are the fact that a few of the members disagree on things, such as last week there was a lot of disagreement when Dave tried to take over and change the script, the only reason this caused disagreements is because he didn’t talk through the dicition before hand, but after a long discussion we all agreed to let Dave have more input on the script. It has been the same with all other problems we work through them by talking it through and making a comprimise. I think that our group has worked really well so far, the only things that I think need improving on for the future and the rest of this project is people need to voice their opinions better and make sure that everyone is happy with everything before making decisions, also I feel that sometimes people do not have a lot to do, I pointed out to the group in a team meeting last week that I felt that I did not have enough jobs to do, and since then I have both been involved a lot more.

Poster - 21st Jan 10
I spent this afternoon creating a post with Tara. I helped Tara make a poster in order to promote the premier of the first episode of 'Lines', the posters will be put up all around college tomorrow, these will inform people of the show and generate a larger audience.
The template image version
The poster was created in 'pages' using a template Tara found, I decided we should stay with the same style text and layout but change the information to all of the information about the show and where you can view it. The template had an image on it that we needed to change so I asked Tim to make an image of the cast of lines that fits with the show and would look good on the poster. He created a really good image using 'photoshop' of the cast in front of the logo of the black-board. I think this poster will be very effective as it is eye-catching and people will want to read the poster.
Now that we have finished the poster, tomorrow we are going to need to print a copy then have it photocopied and also go and placed them around college.

Title Sequence
Using footage of the cast writing their names of a white-board Matt L has created the title sequence for the opening part of our show. The sound is the soundtrack that Me & Sam found from a band on myspace.
I think this video is really good because not only does it begin the show with shots that astablish that the show is set in a school but the sequence links with the logo for show, which is lines written on a black board, in this all of the cast write their names and 'lines' on a white board.
I think that the video is also very entertaining a will interest the audience from the beginning as it is a very catchy song and the style of the video is very interesting and I think that it fits with out target audience and the types of videos they are likely to watch.

Today I have been editing the social networking sites, updating status' about the progression of the making of the show and website.
I also updated the information about the show on the Twitter and Flickr in the description boxes on the profiles, because I realised that they had not been written so people may not fully understand what the profile is for.

Once Matt had finished editing the title sequence I posted updates on the social networking sites, telling everyone that the title sequence was on youtube, and posted links to the video so people will no where to find it.

Dave has created a website for the show...
Although this website is very basic at the moment and does not have a lot of content, there will be a information sections, the video and links to all of our social networking sites.
I think that the website looks very good so far and will definitely attract audiences.

Flickr - 19th Jan 10
My job today was to create a Flickr account so that fans of the show can see pictures of the make of the show.
I have never really used Flickr so this was a new experience for me, when I went to sign up on flickr I discovered that you can only sign up with a Yahoo email so I had to create a different email address (cdfilms@ymail.com).
After creating the account I went through all of the pictures that our group has taken so far and chose some of the best ones to put on the Flickr, I created two 'sets' on the account one with pictures of us planning and marketing and the other one is of the audititons.
This Flickr account will be linked to our websites and social networking sites to give the fans some more extra content to view, this was an idea we decided to do as through research of other web sow many have Flickr accounts with pictures of the cast and crew on so I think that this seems like a good thing to do to market the show to more audiences.
