How new technology has changed how media is exhibited.

Creative and Media Practitioners exhibited their work in many different ways depending on the type of work they produce and the target audience they want to attract. Over many years the introduction of new technology has helped in giving people many ways to exhibited their work, for example the introduction and growing popularity of the internet and social networking sites. Most media and art forms where generally shown to audiences through gallery exhibitions but over time with the internet becoming so popular creative and media practitioners can now exhibit their work online for anyone to see. Using sites like Youtube to show videos and Flickr to show images. The use of internet social networking sites has also encouraged media practitioners to show work or promote work online as it can be seen by anyone and more people will become aware of it through people passing the links onto their friends. Blogs and Websites are also used to show creative work and give information about work to audiences.

A example of a creative and media practitioner that has change the way they exhibit they work due to the growing popularity of new technology is David Shrigley, an artist whose work includes; drawings, paintings, sculpture, photography and animation. David Shrigley began his career in 1991 when technology was not as advanced as it is toady, in 1991 not many people used computers and the internet was hardly used. David Shrigley exhibited his work through only art galley exhibitions and printed postcard designs, through his work is still shown in gallery exhibitions he has defiantly changed to fit new technologies. David Shrigley’s first change into the new technology was showing his work on his website, he has images of all of his work on his website. The new technology has helped him in his transition into animation work, the internet, mainly website such as Youtube have helped in showing his animation work. David Shrigley although he still does exhibitions like before the new technology of today, the change in technology has defiantly benefitted his work, not only because it has open up new forms of work that he can be involved but has benefitted in increasing his range of audience, before the technology altered the only people that would get to see his work were people that could go to exhibitions, and for people that couldn’t get to the exhibitions would not be able to see his work. Whereas now due to technology such as the internet, anyone can see his work from their own homes, audiences can find all of his work just by searching his name in Google. This has helped in getting David Shrigley a larger following and more people are likely to go to his gallery exhibitions due to seeing his previous work online. Without the internet not many people would even have heard of David Shrigley, let alone have seen his work.

New technology has not only changed how art and video is shown, but has also changed in exhibiting music in many ways. They main way would be that new technology such as the internet has changed the music industry, the internet has made it possible to listen to and download music opposed to buying CD and tapes before technology like the internet was developed. This has helped in getting more people to buy artists’ music. The internet is also a main way that music artist now promote they work, by having website and social networking sites with information about music releases and previews of new work. Music artists can also exhibit they music video on social networking sites like Youtube to generate a larger audience. A lot of music artist today have also used the internet to get into the music industry. Bands such as ‘Arctic Monkeys’ achieve their success through a following on the social networking site Myspace, before they were famous they posted demos and pictures on their Myspace site, which helped get their music out to audiences and help generate a fan based, it was the success they achieved through Myspace that got them many record deal offers and gigs.

The Gorillas' Myspace page:

New technology has not only changed the way music artists exhibit their music but in some ways has changed bands, for example; ‘Gorillaz’, a band based upon technology. Each member of Gorillaz is an animated characters, they are not known as themselves, all the art for the music and music videos are these animated characters. The new technology today is what formed this band, with the animating software technology available, they creatures would not have been able to create this band and make it famous as the first and only animated band.

A music video by Gorillaz:

Overall the new technology has completely change the way people see and use the media industry, and it has made it a lot easy to exhibit media practitioners work, it has also created new forms of media.
