Planning Meeting - 6 January 10

In our second meeting today we began our roles and start planning. The class was split into two rooms; writers and casting in one room planning characters and storylines and the marketing and publicity team in another room researching way of marketing.

Before spliting into group everyone had the task to write down what they feel their role involves and what they are going to do, sort of like a check list of what everyone is going to be doing. We also had to write down a rough list of what each role is going to need from the budget.....
Me, Tara and Ash decided that as part of our role as job will be;
To Setup...facebook - myspace - youtube - vimeo - twitter - a website - 4chan - facepunch (to show and promote our mini series)
Also to advertise the show we thought of making; posters and t-shirt.
From these ideas the only budget we would need is for the; t-shirts and the poster prints.

In the marketing team we began with talking about names for the show, we had two names 'Detention Deficit' and 'The Regulars' which we had to get everyone to argee on, but the class was split 11 votes for 'Detention Deficit' and 3 votes for 'The Regulars', it took until the end of today to get everyone to argee on 'The Detention Deficit' which in my opinion was rediculous amount of time for deciding, the poeple that ended up changing their minds could have just change there minds to begin with, but they wouldn't just because appearntly no one gave their name 'The Regulars' a chance before dissmissing it.

During the choosing the names the marketing team had to come up with a target audience, which based upon the information the writers had told us about the show, we decided it would be 15-20 year olds. For this target audience the writers asked if it would be okay to have swearing content, so as one of my task for the day I researched the 'BBFC' certificate for 15 years+ content. The contents it is aloud to have is.......

Discrimination

The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory

language or behaviour.

Drugs

Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not

promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily

accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example,

aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

Horror

Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic

or sexualised.

Imitable behaviour

Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and

self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be

copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example,

‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be

acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated

use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity

Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without

strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a

non-sexual or educational context.

Sex

Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail.

There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour,

but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable

unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is

sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Theme

No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is

appropriate for 15 year olds.

Violence

Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction

of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to

be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also

unlikely to be acceptable.

There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence

but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and

have a strong contextual justification.

The writers will now have to stick to these regulations in order for 15 year olds to be able to view the show.

The marketing team then had to visit the website of similar tv or web shows to see what kind of content they feature on their websites...I looked at the website for a mini series 'The Guild', on their wesbite they feature links to; twitter, facebook, flickr, xbox, youtube & community. The website also has links to mechidise and DVD purchase. These are all good ideas that could be used for promoting our mini series.
After the marketing team looked at many series' website we decided on some basic ideas for additional content we could feature on site to promote our show;
- A game
- Flickr
- Character Profiles on social networking sites, like the teenage characters from the show are using them.
.......I think that all of these idea are very good and fit with the theme of the series, and would be very useful for the promotion of the show as they are all online content that our target audience would be interested in.

After each group had had their own meeting we had a class meeting again to talk about any ideas that each team had come up with. Everything went well and most people agree on everything that was said, the only conflict was about the character in the show being harasted by a secret agent, this character was the comprismize for using the detention theme, and the creators of the orginal secret agent idea feel that the writers have changed the way the character should be. Which I agree with as it was the comprimize for using the idea and the writers did come up with a character that wasn't how it was intended to be without even consulting with the rest of the class. The class talked through the issue and came to the agrement that maybe having the character as it orginally was may be to complicated.

The ideas that the writers came up with that are think are good ideas is;
- each of the students having a book that represents them
- not seeing the teacher, maybe just hearing the teacher's voice in the title sequence
- and I think that the basic ideas for the characters are good.
